Color Question about breeding Orpingtons

I have a beautiful little splash Orpington hen chick from a batch of blue/black/splash eggs, and I'm wondering which one of my roos I should pair her up with..a lavender roo, or a big black, split lavender roo.

I have no idea which way to go with this, as I know nothing about genetics, although I am leaning toward the black one.  Am I correct?

Depends what color you want, but if you breed her to the black you'll get 100% blue chicks. Then if you breed the blues, you'll get a mix of black, blue, and splash.

Lay down with dogs and you get up with fleas.

Thank you!   I am so challenged when it comes to understanding genetics!

I'm hoping to get some striking colors, I like the darker mixes.

I have another question:

My splash hen is starting to look more like a roo...I have a black hen and lavender hens..what will I get if I breed him to my lavender hens?  My black hen?

Does it work the same in reverse?

Splash to black is always going to be 100% blues. Splash to lavender I don't really know. But there are those that do breed lavender to blue/black/splash birds so maybe one of those will chime in.

Ok, I wasn't sure if it worked in reverse.  I love the blues, but I only have one black hen.  I have lots of lavender hens, though, so am curious to know what would come of a breeding to lavenders.

Splash to lavender produces blues. This is assuming the splash is not homozygous for lavender or a carrier of a lavender allele.

As far as I know it's not.  I guess I will find out though...smile.png

What I'm wondering Tim, is the result of breeding the resulting blues. What are the chances you'll have a lavender pop up? Same as black?

Lavender should not pop up.
