Uh oh...I think she is a HE

*sigh* I think Eggroll (Australorp) is a Roo. My girls are almost 3 months old. Keep in mind that I’m new to raising chickens – this is my first set of chicks so I’m learning a lot as I go. Their combs really started growing last week and I noticed that Eggroll has a lot more going on. She’s also been acting like a bit of a bully lately which is sad cuz she was the cutest, sweetest most affectionate little chick out of all of them. The girls personalities are really starting to come out so I didn’t think much of it – just letting them work it out amongst themselves and they all get along really well. I’ve been on the lookout for any signs that the hatchery may have misidentified their genders – but no signs of wattles or spurs or anything so I thought I was good. Then this morning as I was leaving for work at about 5:20am, I heard the most pitiful, gargling, choking sound. There’s no way I can even emulate it by typing – sort of like a “gug gugkkaa kaa”. LOL I’m sure you all know what I mean.  It scared the bejesus out of me cuz I thought one of my girls were hurt. As I scrambled over to their coop I realized…I think somebody tried to crow. BLERGH! I don’t want a Rooster. I have hens for pets – with the benefit of eggs. I don’t want them to get brutalized by some aggressive rooster. But mainly, I’m really attached to my sleep and I don’t need a rooster going off at all hours of the night. I don’t want to bother anybody either. I live out in the country on 5 acres but the coop is nearish our neighbors house and she is a super sweet older lady and I don’t want to disturb her. So I guess I’ll keep an eye on things and see what happens. Maybe I heard wrong and somebody was just making a weird noise? Maybe I have a transgendered hen who wants to try and crow now and again? Time will tell. I love my Eggroll though, so I’m sad…

I dream of a world where chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned.

I know how you feel. I had this really sweet chicken that I raised since I helped it hatch. My DH kept telling me it's a roo, but I didn't believe him. Then one day I was sitting on the couch with my sweetheart on my lap... and he crowed. Very well too. Must've been practising somewhere in secret. If that boy wasn't sitting on my lap I would've gone through the roof. My ears were ringing! DH on the other hand, was laughing so hard he could barely say Told you so!

But then my 5 yo old "crowed" the other day when she nearly fell of the washing line. So Eggroll may just... smile.png

You give me a smidge of hope, Sumi. They WERE all perched on their roosting bar. They sleep in a dogpile - maybe she almost got knocked off :)
