Hello all, I'm just hoping for some thoughts. My favorite chicken, a 2-year old Buff Orpington, died suddenly in her laying box this morning.
She's been completely healthy, but it hit 100 degrees yesterday and was in the 80s this morning. I'm not sure of the temperature in the laying box; it shouldn't have been too high because it was morning and the coop is in the shade. There is plenty of access to water.
The only odd thing I found when I looked her over was an egg protruding from her vent, which I extracted but only with some force. I didn't have the heart to do an autopsy.
Could she have died from the exertion of laying the egg in the heat? I'm now concerned about my other girls.
