Rotten Egg?

Couldn't decide what forum to put this one in.

I gather eggs every afternoon, wash them and let them dry, then put them in the fridge.

I gave my parents a dozen from the past two days and they found a rotten egg in the bunch. I don't understand how that could have happened. They were handled in a timely manner and kept refridgerated within a half hour of washing. Any ideas of what might have happened? Thanks!

Maybe it was buried under the bedding and it got uncovered when the hens went into the nesting area

I guess it could be a possiblity, but I only have 3 nesting boxes (6) hens, so not a very good chance of missing an egg. Still could've though.... Thanks!

What do they mean by rotten? Maybe just a meat spot?

No the yellow had run throughout, the white was a dull gray color and it smelled rotten.
