Red Star?? Slow developing color?

One of my pullets is supposedly a Red Star but she's still white? Shouldn't she be showing some red and orange? She has a few black feathers? Thoughts? Is she not a Red Star? Also, her comb is especially red and large and she's still young! Is this normal for a girl? Thanks guys!

Definitely not a red star pullet...looks like a boy. Red star pullets are reddish colored with white feathers on the wing tips and tail usually. The males are white like that, so I guess it could be a red star cockerel. hu.gif

Man, hopefully not I just figured out that one of my other pullets is actually a cockerel.... Thanks! Any one else? Thoughts?

not sure what breed it is but it is 100% a little roo...he only looks to be 3-4 weeks old...and at that age if it were a hen the comb would be tiny and very pale in color.

What about this one? Black Star- about same age, maybe a tiny bit older

That one is a girl. The colors are right for a Black Star (aka: Black Sexlink) and the comb is small.

I would bet the other is a boy too. The feathers are boyish color, comb is too pink and thick legs.

I'm really sorry. This happens a lot.

A good website to identify chickens and baby chicks is Feathersite.com on their poultry page. It gives a good indication what the chicks/chickens should look like.

As far as sexing goes, unless you buy from a sexed/pullet bin, your chances of getting roosters in the mix are high. Even buying sexed females end up being male. Both my neighbor and I have had it happen.
