Welsh Harlequins

Just some general pros and cons of the breed, its a toss up between them and buff ducks.

Does anyone know where you can get either of these breeds from in Yorkshire or Derbyshire in the UK.  I'd be especially interested if someone had used the company before.

Until a WH person comes along, let me say welcome to the Duck Forum and I have heard good things about the Welsh Harlequins as far as temperament, laying ability, hardiness and just good all around duckness.

I have a couple of Buffs, and they are wonderful.  They are adopted rescues, two years old when we got them, and they blended into the runner flock within days.  Good layers, good health, great personalities!  A little more laid back than the runners, who are not skittish to begin with.

Nine beautiful Runners, four beautiful Buffs, thousands of beautiful memories and counting.

Looking for ducks?  Please consider adopting rescued ducks.  There are many places and people who do rescues, but we are not allowed to post the links due to BYC regs.  So fire up your web browsers and find some sweet, grateful duckies.

I had considered buffs, but though that welsh harlequins would be better mothers, i would also be interested to know about the possibility of getting mallards, but not just from the local park.

Well, since Welsh Harlequins come from Whales England, you might fine some good breeders there.

I love my Welsh Harlequins. Good egg layers, friendly birds, and they are beautiful!!!

Well, since no one has commented on the Buffs, I'll throw my opinion out there. I have both breeds, and I haven't had them for long, however My Buff ducklings are more people friendly than my WH. I had read that the WH were more calm, and friendly, but I haven't found that to be true. I ordered five of each from metzers, and got one extra buff along with them. Some of my Welshies are more calm than others (the boys mostly) but the buffs are by far beating them out in how calmly they take everything.

My WH like to sit by me outside, or be within sight of me. but my two buff girls step into my hands like a chicken when I go to pick them up out of their brooder and take them outside.  They would much rather be sitting on my lap, than on the ground, and love to be petted, and rubbed on the backs of their necks.

Both breeds are wonderful though, my WH are pretty sweet, and love all the ducks, when my wh boy wasn't doing very well my two wh girls would lay with him by the water bowl, and heard him over to the feed bowls. He's still a runt, and the others are growing BIG so they're extra careful with him.

Hey all, I'm Sierra and I currently own: one Blue swede, 1 GWH, 1 Buff Orp, 4 ancona ducklings hatched jun 28th/29th, and 1 Whippet (dog)

You won't make a mistake with either breed,  Get the one you like the looks of the most.

The Buff will provide more meat. The WH will probably provide more eggs.  If that is a consideration.
