Khaki Campbells won't swim

Thread Starter

Hi - I'm a newby

We have a pool about 30 feet long x 10 feet long and a large well fenced garden.  We have previously kept clipped mallards mainly to keep the pool clean and they did a brilliant job, but have flown off.

So, we have bought 4 khaki campbells, who are very happy in the garden and in their house, but will not under any circumstances get in the water.  We are growing very fond of them.

We have tried penning them by it

Feeding them weed from it and then trying to entice them in (they love the weed)

Herding them onto it (they all immediately got off)

Does anyone have any ideas?

I am having the same problem with my 3 ducks.  Mine are Rouen.  I thought ducks liked to swim?!  hu.gif

my Khaki/Runner cross wasn't too fond of the kiddie pool. Kinda strange, as my pekin loved it. I think it has to do with how much water they get when they are younger. My Calls, which I have now, are absolutely NUTS about water. Adore it. And the breeder let them swim all the time as ducklings, always carefully watched. IDK, maybe that is why they do not like it. But that's so odd that they won't go in at all. What kind of pool is it? Could there be a snapper in it? Hope you figure it out, good luck.  :)

How,old are they if ducklings still feathering then the pond is scary to them and will take time. If newly obtained adults, they too take time to learn new "home" and routine and what's safe.

Ducks love water, but they aren't fast to trust something new.

MY KC's took a while too;  my trio of adults could not be tempted for a number of days, but, once they decided it was safe, I can't keep them away!   The ducklings I hatched also took their sweet time about it, but, patience is the key here.   And your patience *will* be rewarded big_smile.png

Well, I hope they do. It is supposed to be brutally hot this weekend, 105 right now. They have a nice kiddie pool, 3 waterers, and I just put out another large square pan for them.  They won't touch it, just sit there panting.

I have 3 KC's, and only 1 swims. I have a ramp and steps into their kiddie pool, but unless they swim in secret, they do not swim. I had their pool in the middle of the yard where I could see it and never saw them swim. Only 2 of my ducklings really swim, my miniature silver appleyards. Maggie, my stanbridge white swims a little, but not much.

Sorry but I don't understand how ducks could keep a pool clean? My ducks get water dirty pretty much before they get in. They have to have a drink first...lol

Mine always swam. From day 1. Could be cuz I was rather ignorant to duck care and put a pan of water in with them. I'd go in and find them sleeping in it even. They now have a large trough. They seem to be a bit stupid about how to get in but when I put them in they act like it's heaven.

Loving my poultry. Have Guineas as well!
