They are Blue Cayugas, But I am stealing the Periwinkle Cayugas for my A Rivers Edge Farm Name lol.png

Just because I like to be a little different!    I luv them as much as my BeetleSheen Blacks. 

 

Purdy birds too! How many weeks are they? Do either have a tail curl feather showing yet?

Took some new pics of my Blue Cayugas.  Looks like I have 3 drakes & 1 hen th.gif   Isn't that the way the duck quacks

We are thinking of adding ducks to our little farm this spring.  We love the blue cayuga color and have read and been told all the great things about cayugas in general.  Are there any drawbacks?  We live in VT and heard they are especially well suited for our cold winters.  I would love to have some to add this thread!  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My cayugas are black but this is the most active Cayuga thread so I was hoping someone could answer a question for me.  I have had ducklings before but can't remember when the yellowish spot on their chest disappears.  I have one that is REALLY yellow so I am sure there will be some white left behind :(  But the others seem to be fading nicely.  I was just curious when it should be gone for good.

The yellow will be gone when their adult feathers replace the down on the bib. I think mine took 3-5 weeks. By 6-8 weeks, you should know whether they will have any white bib feathers as adults.
For best color, avoid breeding cayugas with white bib feathers (especially males) or white feathers near the bill.

Most duck breeds do really well in the cold New England weather as long as you have shelter for them.

I am in southern Maine and have many different breeds of domestic ducks. The only ones I have to watch carefully in our winters are the muscovy. The caruncling on their heads is prone to frostbite so you have to be careful and make sure they don't stay out when it's really cold.
