SET EGGS JUNE 23 ANYONE WITH ME? - Page 43

I really hope I get a broody something next time I need to hatch.  This incubator thingy is so nerve raking, but still exciting...

I have some pics on my profile of some of the babies I hatched over the last few weeks!!!  I'm so excited that I figured out how to do it. I know they aren't show material.  That's not what I was after.  I was after some very fuzzy, friendly pets that will be loved their entire life (if not at my home then at someone elses).  Now, later this year I would like to get hooked up with someone that could help me and my son get started showing GPLs for 4-H & FFA.  He may change his mind about the breed.  He loves his GPLs.  I have fallen in love with these Turkens.  They are the sweetest.  I thought about Showgirls, but there is a lot of competition in that breed.  I wonder if the Turken has that much competition?  Hmmmm.... Just some thinking out loud.  Not that I don't want him enough competiton.  That would be no fun.  He shoots competition sporting clays, skeet and modified trap for 2 teams.  One for 4-H & the other is a state team.  I think he can handle the competition.  Picking out the right chicken breed is not like picking out the right shot gun. lol

Last evening I checked the remaining eggs under the Momma BO hens. Only one was still pipped, the others didn't sound right when I tapped on the shell to see if I'd get a responding peeping inside. Took one egg and tapped on the top where the air sack would be........egg exploded. It was filled with green slime. All the other eggs were the same (except the pipped egg.) This morning Rosie had two babies under her, a black and a grey Cochin mix.

I've another Momma Cochin that has 9 babies. One is extreemly small (1 wk old) The tiny one hatched w/some of the yolk sack still not absorbed. Instead of absorbing it dried up. I'm guessing that's why the chick is 1/2 the size of all the other chicks. It peeps constantly! When I hold her all cuddled up in my hands she quits peeping. So today I took her and placed her under Shiela, the BO with only 1 chick. Chick was happy, Sheila was happy. So now both of my new Momma's have 2 babies each.

One of my chicks had a long hatch last night and into this morning.  When I checked it around 8:30AM it has some kind of yellowish drainage out of its rear.  I wiped it thinking if I didn't it would get pasty butt.  Instead of the thick goo that I wiped off, it came out like a watery gas fart (sorry, there's just no other way to explain it).  Anyway,  my JG that died last week did the same thing.  It also had a long difficult hatch.  What is this and is there anything I can do?  Chick is very alert and intrested in what is going on around it.  But my JG did the same way for 3 days- extremely alert then boom-gone.

I'm so upset:(  My Ameraucanas didn't hatch:(:(  I only had 2 Amer eggs from my shipped batch that made it this far.  When I set them for lockdown, I always candle.  One did have and internal pip.  Wonder what happened.   Temp stayed at 100F.  Humidity at 70%.  Well, I had 7 out of 11 hatch.  The one's that I really wanted to hatch~my 3 Turkens, 2 AmerOps, 1 Orpington, & my mystery bantam~hatched.  Really wanted those Ameraucanas.  I just love them. 

Sheila & Rosie w/their 3 babies. They seem to be sharing the raising of them. The BO chick I gave to the hen w/just one chick didn't take. The hen accepted the chick, but the chick didn't accept the hen!! There are 2 Black Cochin mix & 1 Grey Cochin mix chicks. In the center picture, one of the black chicks is in the back by the feeder. Couldn't get any closer of a picture as the two Momma's are very protective.

5 of my silkies went to their new homes, so I'm left with 3! And secretly hoping the the big, beautiful one is going to be a rooster...he's definitely going to be show quality [yay!] I'm down to 1 cochin and I've got 12 eggs in the incubator, all of which seem to be growing. I candled at day4 and saw veins all over and one of the eggs had a baby chick hanging out right on top so I could see him/her so clearly! I should have taken pictures!

I finished my chicken pen Sunday and the Orphingtons moved in today...they are thrilled to have a whole area to roam around in, and they are so stinking friendly. I let them out the other night and they both immediately hopped onto my lap and cuddled with me.

I'm really excited about this next hatch, these chickens have become so dear to me [my hubby and I can't have kids] the hatching and rearing has really been helpful for me, as it takes my mind off of the fact that we can't have kids...it's really helped me to relax about it and just gives me something to look forward too.

I'm hoping my cochin grows up to be just as broody as I've read they are...The incubator has so many variables!

OMG, now my BO is going broody... I'm not going to be getting any eggs!  Trying to decide if I should get her some eggs or if I should try to break her???

I know you CAN break them of being Broody, but I've never been able to do it. I've always just given in and given them some eggs to sit on.

I tried to break my sussex before giving her eggs.  She spent 3 days in a wire dog crate, seemed fine but when I let her out she went right back to the nest.  Immediately put her back in for another 3 days... same thing, so I gave up and got her eggs.
