Chickens; Quieter alone? And quiet chickens?

My Buff Orpingtons talk A LOT and louder than the rest. BRAAAAAAAAAWK... My Easter Eggers honk like geese. It's the Barred Rocks that are quiet. I agree with an earlier post, that it's really more the individual chicken and maybe the group dynamics that determine noise output, rather than the breed.

Ok, I have to add 2c...

My Buff Orp is very quiet, she hardly ever makes a sound, even when I handle her. My Salmon Fav hens are pretty quiet too, even when they talk, it's a soothing, quiet sound. The French Marans I have are also quiet birds.
- All of these heritage breeds lay in the winter with no supplemental light. The Marans lay the largest egg of the 3 breeds. So, I have good, even egg laying, year round.

The noisiest by far, Ameracaunas. They talk all the time and sometimes they're a little loud.

I am in a similar situation. I live in a suburb with "noise sensitive" neighbors. So I combed through this site looking for quiet chickens and found varied responses. As of now, I have a white orpington and light brahma (neither are laying yet), and they are both extremely quiet. They roost at night in a large rabbit hutch which I keep inside a 10' x 10' dog kennel and I let them free range the yard in the afternoon and evening. I NEVER hear them. Not when I'm in the house (with windows open), and not even when I am in the back yard with them. They do make some noise when I pick them up, but not much. I am hoping when they do start laying, they won't be too noisy.

I have a friend that has about 20-30 orpingtons on her property, and when I go to visit, I wouldn't even know they were there, if I didn't seem them roaming around. So, I think they might be a safe bet, but just like all animals, they all have their own personality. Good luck

Sounds like I could try the Orps then. X3 Thanks. I really wanted a heritage breed for our winters... I will be building a 5'X5' coop so I can try EEs later if I end up having a need for blue and green eggs...!

I've looked into marans... I love those DEEP red eggs and want some but have heard they're hard to find quality though. Thanks again!

Oh, and anything turkey is off-limits... My beau says he will not allow such devil spawn on his property. XD I don't blame him too much TBH!

if you have people wanting to buy eggs you will need more than 2 as they may lay then they may not. its so hot here that out of at least 30 hens we are maybe getting 5-6 eggs a day if we are lucky not to mention the broody my quietest chickens is a group of 4 consisting of 1 oegb rooster and 3 pullets that never make a peep except for the occasional cluck and the rooster only crows in the morning as do most of the others the most noise they make is when they get startled and they all go off alerting everyone around that there's something strange going on or there's danger.

btw marans lay brown not red ;-)
