I'm just wondering if anyone on here has worked to add a chicken ordinance in Stafford, VA? I did a little bit but got nowhere, but didn't go at it full force as the hard-worker in Prince William County did. I decided not to draw attention to myself and move forward.

To me it appears that those with less than 3 acres that aren't zoned A-1 or A-2 can't have them, though last time I looked was a few years back and I had to search 3 different places to piece it together. A friend of mine was told by the county if the neighbors don't complain, and there isn't an HOA, go for it. I got the feeling as well that the county doesn't want a big debate on this.

Any input is welcome ~ I'm to the point of wanting it clear cut and legal.

Hi, I'm fellow stafford county resident. We are about to hatch some chicks and see if the neighbors complain. From what I've seen, it seems chickens are not permited in residential areas. But the law seems vague to me. I would really like to try to get this changed to permit chickens. I know Spotsylvania and Fredericksburg have recently passed ordinances to allow chickens in residential areas. Let me know if you are interested in working together on this issue.

Hey,

How is it going there? Do you have some birds now?

It is cool about Fredericksburg, but the way the law has gone in Spotsylvania is a mess. I really hope if things heat up in Stafford it doesn't go the same way. I used to want to try to get an ordinance passed here, but don't want to now since we're already raising hens. It is going smoothly. If something gets started, I'm sure I'll get on board, but I won't be the first voice calling for reform :).

Take care~

Hi, We have some silkies that are about 4 weeks old now. We will move them outside in a few weeks when the weather warms up. All these March snow storms have thrown our schedule off :)

Good luck finding out anything... The most I could come up with is that there have not been any prosecutions for chicken raising and if your neighbors dog kills a chicken they owe you $5.00. Yet stealing someone's chicken will net a felony. Just do it low key and don't start off trying to raise 50 fighting cocks in your garage - lol

I found a website that clearly shows how each area in Stafford is zoned, and also info showing R-1 is not zoned for chickens. Regardless, we have them and our neighbors are building a coop! I think we all need to start writing to our local representatives. Susan Stimpson is running for L. Gov., so she would be a good one to start with.

Meh, why ask for permission. Your just inviting government involvement in what we do on our private property. Next thing you know they will add a personal property tax per chicken or require licenses (like dogs).
I don't like it at all. What I do on my property is no ones business, provided I am not violating anyone's constitutional rights.

It is better if the chicks are kept in the persons yard. There is a person in our neighborhood who has them and they free range during the day when "no one is home." If I wanted animals in my area I would have moved to a farm. I do not begrudge those folks wanting to save money (seriously, how much is feed and PROPER vet care?) and gather and sell the eggs but keep them in your own yard. And when you don't, or someone complains, stop going all Rambo on the neighborhood. We edon't need you posting signs saying "mind your own effn business, **** man, man up a little and quit being a bully.
