Weird Food Taboos

There has been something that has bothered me about my family that has to do with the food they eat.  Now, I would understand it if they were vegan or vegetarian, or had some sort of allergies but they're not and they don't.

My late mother wouldn't eat any color eggs except white.  She wouldn't eat game meat, presumably because she grew up eating game meat.  She wouldn't eat cheese made from anything except cow's milk.  Forget something mild like buffalo.  Never mind my dad--he never ate anything except beef and pork with potatoes.

My sisters have odd eating habits too.  One won't eat chicken or any animal that has been raised by me because she knows it was an animal someone owned.  She buys all her meat at the grocery store prepackaged because it doesn't make her think about the animals.  Never mind the conditions most of these animals live in.

I told my sister that I bought some Montana maple syrup and some boxelder maple cream.  When I told her the boxelder maple tasted a little different, she promptly dismissed it as being no good.

My other sister just tried brown eggs last year and asked me beforehand if they'd be okay.  (seriously!)  She wouldn't try the cooked bison sample at the natural store she shops, though her husband did and pronounced it good.

I realize people have likes and dislikes, but really?  I just had two goats butchered and the meat is wonderful, but my sisters would be horrified.  I eat more game meat and fresh vegetables than anything else, but my family is convinced I'm weird.

Do you have relatives or friends who do this?

Make a big meal with goat meat, brown eggs, bison cheese, and anything else you can think of. Then invite them over for "porkchops" etc. big_smile.png  Don't tell them what it really is until AFTER they are done complimenting you about what a fabulous meal  you just provided! wink.png

No chickens right now, but between Jamison and Samson I have my hands full anyways!

^Hahaha about the meal.

I must confess I am becomming more and more of a food weirdo myself.

I would love to try duck eggs in baking as I have recently learned they are the 'secret' ingredient in 5 star baked goods so to speak, but I can't get over the 'ick eew" factor. My mom said people eat them like fried eggs ..again I just cant ..Ick factor kicks in.

Since being pregnant with my son (8 years ago) Haha I have been put off most brands of chicken. I wouldnt touch tysons with a 50 foot pole. There's just this slimyness about it that sets me gagging every time. I dont mind paying more for the good stuff. Free range, air chilled type deal.

I also would love to build up a nice pantry filled with marvelous things I made/canned from the garden. Fresh, by me. But again I cant get over the 'fear' of botulisim and killing my family off for green beans.

I can't do goats milk. and I am tempted to do 'raw' milk but I would really have to know the farmer or I wouldn't be able to stomach it.

I think you are lucky to not have a "ick" factor kick in for you and be able to taste whatever you wanted would be awesome.

Edit to add, I cant eat white eggs, they gross me out. I am a brown egg only girl. Cant do blue/green ones either. Hehe

I don't can, primarily because I don't know how and haven't had time to learn.  I blanch and freeze.  Raw milk has a chance of bacteria, so when I milk, I want to pasteurize it.  Tyson chicken--well, I've seen recalls from their plants in Colorado, back when I lived there.  Enough said.

I won't eat certain animals out of principle.  Horse, llama, dog and cat are right out.  I won't eat predators and horses are, well, horses.  Not ruminants.  And since they get treated with medications that are not for food animals, there's a health thing there too.  (A zillion horses get shipped to feed lots in Washington and are butchered in Canada.)  Llamas, well, I've got one and he's not food.

NO "Mutton" HERE at MY Place !

I don't like the smell of it.

( IF "starving"....I would Quickly make "an exception" to THIS RULE !!! )

You couldn't feed me "goat".....and expect me to accept it as Pork..either.

These common meats have their distinct characteristics....AND different tastes and odors.

I am a "meat-eater".....and almost anything else......except COOKED Turnips.

Can't STAND turnips....except maybe RAW ( uncooked ) !!!

Mutton varies a lot!!  So does goat, or chevon, if you prefer.  Personally, I am not a big mutton fan, but I once had some that was really good.  It was from our own sheep, For whatever reason, I didn't get the lambs butchered one year until they were well past the lamb stage.  I braced myself for some greasy strong flavored meat, but I was surprised.  It was delicious.  Tasted more like beef than anything. Didn't taste at all like the mutton I had had in the past.  Didn't really taste like lamb, either. I never did figure out why it was so good.

On the other side of the coin are the lamb loin roasts my mother used to buy that were marinated in something or other and vacuum sealed so they would last forever.  They were imported from New Zealand and they were just about inedible.  I am not fussy, but I couldn't stomach these.  The only saving grace is that they were small.

My FIL could not stand lamb or mutton in any way, shape, or form.  Atleast that is what he always said.  Now my MIL was a thrifty soul and she had to make a dollar stretch to keep her family fed.  One day she saw lamb on sale at a real bargain.  So she bought some and cooked it up.  She didn't tell anyone what it was. At dinner time, my FIL sampled his portion and said, "What is this?  Sirloin tips?"  My MIL, just nodded.  FIL ate a lot of "sirloin tips" in his life, and to his dying day he never did know what they really were.

Simple cure to peoples weird food acumen. Place them on a far away island with no food but what they dislike, don't care for or otherwise. I give them a day and a half, tops.

I watched a National Geographic show last night on t.v.   Let's just say we're lucky wolf spiders aren't a delicacy.  I saw these tribal people hunting for them.. they loved them.  It was hard to watch.  Hairy spiders give me the creeps.

My sister is super picky. She won't eat whole wheat bread because it "tastes different". I like it better than white and other wheat bread because it just has a better taste and is well... healthier. White bread grosses me out.

Whenever she eats chicken (The only meat she eats) she pretty much disects it. she cuts out and veins or differently colored spots and cuts off the outside of it. Sometimes it's actually funny to look at her plate when she's done because there's random scraps everywhere. She even pulls apart chicken strips! She won't eat meat if it's on the bone. I understand that to some people it's a little icky, but everyone else in the family will gladly eat it. And, she's a teenager.

I don't understand her. idunno.gif

Mark 11:22-23

"Have faith in God," Jesus answered. "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him.

This describes how I eat meat as well; I completely cut off fat from steak, discard cartilage and other nasty looking stuff and eat a small amount of what's left.  I'm very picky about meat, I just don't love it like my veggies and fruits.  The other day I had excellent chicken salad but thought, "more grapes, less chicken" LOL!  I also hate raw celery...sickbyc.gif  It's fine if it's cooked, but not raw.  Once my grandparents made up a nasty rabbit stew and didn't tell me what it was thinking I would love it if I didn't know it was rabbit, it was revolting!
