Don't need help, just need someone to listen

I murdered my first chickens.  Five beautiful Ancona roosters.  They had become the gestapo of the flock and scared them all to death whenever I let them mingle.  They were hilarious too though.  Would line up and staulk the neighbors' dogs and cats and chase them out of the yard.  But, I only have one Ancona hen and knew they'd only get more aggressive so they had to go.  I processed two the other day and my hubbie thought I'd done very well but later in the day I bawled my head off.  Today I processed the last three and so far, so good.  I think I may have some of my grandmother's DNA in me after all (she raised hundreds of chickens and worked in a poultry house earning a penny for each chicken she cleaned).

Oh, gosh, ease up on yourself!  Stop thinking "murder," first of all.  Just check the dictionary, it's not even close to correct.  It sounds to me like you were being a responsible chicken keeper.

It gets easier, especially when you see how happy your hen will be without all those boys bothering her! And when you taste how delicious your home grown chicken is :)I good luck to you!

I need to put my "big girl panties" on and do the same thing. I congratulate you, and admire you for doing what needed to be done.hugs.gif

I don't see it as murder, just an ugly necessity.

I'm doing this this weekend to one Mean Rooster. He's young, about 18 to 20 weeks, but he just makes me and the rest of the flock miserable and on edge. This will not be my first time, but I always become a little solemn afterwords, its natural. But when I'm cooking up fresh chicken that I raised, things are much brighter. Mean Roosters Taste Best!

7 Australorps, 6 Buff Orpingtons, 1 production red, 1 young bared rock roo, 1 pair of Old English Game Bantams, 4 bantam hens, 4 Freakin' cats,  (RIP Cookie) best dog ever, 1 dog sky(smartsmartsmart), and a variety of new chicks.

I'm afraid I will be having my first chicken culling experience this weekend due to a hen that's turned downright nasty on her flockmates.  I'm not happy about it, but like others have said, it's for the good of the rest of the chickens and it's best not to waste an otherwise useful bird.
