I believe my duck murdered her baby.

So, I was going to change Alexis's water and fill up her feed dish. She had cracked a couple eggs, but I always figured that it was because they weren't fertile. Well, this one was. Laying next to a cracked eggshell, was a fully developed ducklings, but it was long dead. It was about 2 inches long. I easily made out a bill, body, legs, head, eyes, everything. But the shell certainly wasn't cracked from the inside. There was like, a crater in the center. Well, it just about perfectly fit her bill. I have no clue why she would crack an egg that had a fully developed duckling. Any explanations?

Animal family: Two Betta fish, four White Cloud Minnows, two African Dwarf Frogs, two male gerbils, one quarter horse mare, one blind South Pole bull, five Blue Swedish Cayuga mix ducks, and one mini dachshund.

My pets give me headaches, heartaches and tons of stress, they're hard on the wallet and give nothing back, but they are the light of my life. I wouldn't be who I am without them.

How old is she? Animals in general under a year are still unsure what to do with the whole parenting thing.

If she is older, then you will have to buy an incubator, and collect the eggs a few times a day.

She's around a year, a bit younger.......I plan on incubation, as I'll most likely be more successful that way. Perhaps I'll try again the natural way, but I have an abundance of fertilized eggs, and something feels wrong about eating a fertilized egg, whether a baby would become of it or not. I really want to expand my flock, but if she's just going to do stuff like this, she can't be a mum.
