That hasn't been my experience. Most of my clients are very happy when they finally reach the age of 65 and can join the Medicare program. 

People have trouble paying for the outrageous costs of medication (without part D) but 80%/20% coinsurance is very good insurance at a fantastic rate, about a tenth of the private market cost. 

Don't give more credit than money earned. Some people work just long enough each year to earn the maximum EIC and then quit their job.

There will always be people who are less than ethical. We have such people in Washington and their income is also supplied by the tax payer. The EIC encourages people to enter the workforce and stay current with the IRS. This is good, imo. 

The problem I see in your scenario is the "boyfriend" probably had income, and was contributing to the household thus she didn't need the benefits (or as many benefits) she was receiving. In turn she was robbing someone who genuinely needed them.

She is a single mom of four young children. I have watched her struggle to work the night shift at the factory, maintain her home, and care for her children. The boyfriend was probably just as financially challenged. I don't even know if he was the father of any of the children. Now she has a criminal record. I think she was supposed to report that he was staying there within 10 days. 

From my understanding, it was a mistake....I know there is always another side of the story, but I've seen someone trying to make it in this world despite multiple challenges who now has a criminal record thus making gainful employment even more difficult.  

If it were a mistake, I would have made her understand that it cannot and will not happen again. In order to press charges against her and get a conviction there must have been evidence to the contrary.

This may technically be true if we are talking welfare.... If we are talking disability is has no barring... Disability benefits are set by how much you payed in not by how much you need.

Unfortunatly our legal system does not actually work off the "must be proven guilty" system that is was built on.
