Can anyone tell me what kind of breed this little rooster is?

Little Mr Roo.jpg

He was sold to me when about 4 months old as a Delaware hen but he turned out to be a rooster, and I sure don't think he is a Delaware.  But what is he??  He doesn't even sound like any chicken I've ever heard.  He coos and trills like a pigeon (and gets *really* excited for scratch and sounds like he's talking in a foreign chicken language - lol).

Thanks,

Denise

Louisiana wife (to Kevin) and mother to our 13 year old daughter (Emma), a Buff Brahma roo, Romeo, 2 Americauna hens (Juniper and Daisy), a RIR hen (Henna), a Boston Terrier (Oreo), a blue chihuahua (Peanut or Petey), a chiwiennie (Dobby), a Yorkie (Luna), and a cat, who thinks she's a dog (Rainy).  We all live happily, and sometimes rather noisily, on 3 mostly wooded acres where we are...

With that brassiness on his hackles and saddle I think he's a mix. Coloring looks a lot like what a Buff X Light Brahma roo looks--only clearly yours is not brahma.

I could see part colombian wyandotte, but not pure---he's def. a mix. Sorry you didn't get your hen.

Well, the kittens aren't so cute anymore and the easter egger cockerels are in the freezer. Plus, I think offering them as "prizes" scared folks off! So, I'm still posting quotes, if you know it let me know. I'm very enamored of this new one, it may hang around for a while!

I think what you are describing is him calling the girls to 'come see what I've got'.  Roos do that to call their girls to treats, worms,etc...they get really excited.  If you watch close, he will pick up some and drop it repeatedly to show his girls what he has to offer.

X2 That's what I was thinking exactly.  He's probably trying to impress the only 'hen' around.  Poor little guy :P.

Oh, yes, now that I look at the pics, I think you're right that he's probably a Columbian Wyandotte mix of some variety :)  He really is a looker!  About his cooing...I have 5 hens and another big-daddy rooster (Buff Brahma) and this little guy makes totally different sounds than any of them.  Also, he makes this sound when WE come up to him with food and there are no other chickens around!  The only 'normal' sound he does make is his crow :-D
