Ugh. The guys at the IFA are puzzled as to why I'm still buying chick starter.

Our chickens are 8 weeks old. I have decided (thanks to BYC) to feed them starter until I see an egg. The feed at the IFA is kept in a separate barn from the hardware store so I'm always accompanied by an employee. Since I've been in there so much I'm acquainted with most of them.

I don't care what they think of me, I'm just tired of being questioned. "8 weeks old? Why are you still feeding starter? Here's our layer mash, you need to feed them this now!"

I guess I'm just venting. Like I said, I don't care what they think of me. They can think I'm as dumb as a pole for all I care. I however am not outspoken or bold so I just sidestep politely.

Bonus: one of the employees is our next door neighbor. th.gif

I should have bought a 50 pound back from the beginning. I will next year. I'm still buying 5 pound bags because I don't want to store it over the winter.

I checked both IFAs and they only have starter, layer mash, oyster shells, and scratch. idunno.gif

I'll just keep on keepin' on. D.gif

Thanks Southernchick! I should try some other places out of town. I did check while on a trip to Idaho and the town's feed store didn't carry it either so I sort of gave up.

You can keep them on the starter, "Flock Raiser" is just a pelleted Starter/Grower with a fancy name.

My local feed stores have either medicated starter, or layer food hmm.png
They looked at me like I was crazy when I asked for something in between roll.png

Next time you are in TSC, and have 5 minutes to kill, waiting for your friend, look at the ingredients in DuMor Starter/Grower and Purina's Flock Raiser.  Virtually identical in every way.  Everything but the price.  The Flock Raiser was $3 more a 50#.  Both crumbles.

Not suggesting or dissing either one, but shopping is enlightening sometimes.
