I will go fix that post roll.png   IGNORE ME I DIDN'T get any sleep last night barnie.gif

Okay, changed on my end, but I'm keeping my eraser handy just in case.lau.gif

Lav x Lav = 100% Lav

Lav x Lav Split = 50% Lav and 50% Lav Split

Lav Split x Lav Split = 25% Black and 25% Lavender and 50% Lav Split

Black x Lav = 100% Lav Split

Black x Lav Split = 75% blacks and 25% Splits

No, you were right the first time.

Black/Black x Black/ Lav will produce 50% pure Black and 50% Splits

Slick, I breed split x split.  You will get fewer Lav chicks, but they will carry a greater percentage of "Black" genes.

He has black x splits so only 25% would be splits  the rest wold be black.

How do they carry more BLACK genes pop.gif

The split parent will give 1/2 of its offspring the Lav gene and half the Black gene.  The Black parent only has Black to offer, so the Split parent determines the ratio of 50/50.

A Split will carry 1/2 of its genes from the Black parent, 1/2 from the Lav.  So in a split to split breeding 2 of the grandparents will be Black, thus 50% of the genes (on average) will be from the Blacks.

In a Split to Lav breeding (if the lav is from lav x lav, or lav x split), there is one Black grandparent, thus less of the hopefully better quality Black genes to double up on.

Hope this makes sense.  It is easier to demonstrate by drawing punnett squares, but I haven't figured out how to do that on a forum.

I understand what you are saying... I do get it.  They are CLOSER to the Black and not a generation more removed.  I just would like to SEE it.... I am visual that way.

How are you new blacks and splits doing? Are they laying yet????? Got eggs?????

My new Blacks are just starting to lay.  I will wait til spring to make more Splits.  I am trying too decide if I'm just going to use a Black male over Lav females and/or visa versa.  The old time breeders would say to use Lav males over Black females, as they believe type comes more from the female.  That is what I did with this last cross.  All those Splits were sold after this breeding season.

Did you not like them?  Why did you sell them?  Was that just the last of your previous flock you sold?

I am going to make an order VERY soon for some Blacks and Lavs.   If I get 15 chicks, I was going to get 5 black and 10 Lavs.  I have a connection local for more black from the same breeder and maybe some more black chicks in the spring from her source.  Is that a good mix or should I do the opposite?  barnie.gif  I might order them next week.... advice anyone?
