Okay, I don't know what to do. I have 5 eggs under my duck. It's been about 22 days. One egg is turning blue around the middle. I did a search and some people say the egg is bad and will explode. Then I read another thread that someone said half their eggs turn blue. I saw a picture on the web with a duckling hatching from an egg that seemed blueish.
Does anyone know?????
This is my first hatch.

btw--it has no smell & the first time broody is not bothered by it---I mean wouldn't she want to get rid of a bad egg?

Turning a purple colour can indicate a bad egg, but you will know it if you put the egg right up against your nose and have a really good sniff. If it's bad, you'll smell it. If it doesn't smell, I'd say you are safe to leave it in the nest. If you do this at night you'll minimise disturbance to your broody abd can also use the opportunity to candle the egg, so you can see if the occupant is still alive.

I hope you have a great hatch!! :)

Thanks for the reply. I did smell it while she was out eating & taking her bath. I didn't smell anything so I left it in her nest for now.
She is in the coop with the chickens---her choice ever since her sister died. I hate to go out at dark. I had thought it would really upset her. I guess I will need to go at night if I want to candle. I also found a chicken egg in there and I'm not sure how long she has had it---so I want to candle it too. If it's been in there long enough I will just leave it. I know it wasn't there the first week. Sneaky chickens.

Okay I used the mag-lite & four eggs have an air sack. Pretty cool. It's about 1/3 of the egg. The egg with blue is too hard to see through. The area that is blue seems to not let light through. I smelled all 5 eggs & they smell the same. So if this egg has gone bad it's not seeping through. I am reluctant to throw it away. I would feel awful if it was a duckling. I guess I've gotten mixed responses to what blue means on a duck egg. I wanted to be positive before I tossed an egg out. OTOH I really would hate to have it explode like some people have said would happen---yuck. I just wonder why the mother wouldn't get it out of her nest?

The air cell on that good egg looks good. It still has bit of a way to go but it looks about right for 22 days or so. It should end up quite a bit bigger (often they suddenly get bigger a few days before the end). By the end it might be almost twice as big, but kind of sloped down one side.

Does the blue egg have an air cell too, or is it solid right through from end to end?
