Crossbreeding a Brown Leghorn rooster with hens I already have?  Will it work?

 

I have a brown leghorn rooster and am thinking of crossbreeding him with the hens that I already have.  Has anybody done this before, and have they had good results with egg production from the crosses? 

 

Or is there a web page that might list the results.  I have been looking but have not been able to find anything.

 

The list below are the hens I already have.

 

 

 

Amber Whites
We only have one Amber White Hen - The Amber White is a cross between a Rhode Island Red and Rhode Island White.

        

 

Australorp
We have two Black Australorps (Hens)

        

 

Black Sex Link chicken
We have two Black Sex Link Hens.

        

 

Brahma
We have one Buff Brahma Hen.

        

 

Cochin
We have two Blue Cochins, along with one Golden Laced Cochin and these are all Bantams.

        

 

Easter Eggers
We have four Araucanas(Americana or Easter Eggers) hens.

        

 

Faverolles
We have one Salmon Faverolles Hen.

        
         

 

New Hampshire
We have two New Hampshire Red Hens.

        

 

Old English Game
We have two Old English Hens

        

 

Orpington
We have two White and one Buff Orphingtons (Hens).

        

 

Plymouth Rock
We have two Plymouth Barred Rock hens.

        

 

Polish
We have two Golden Polish Hens.

        

 

Rhode Island
We have two Rhode Island Red Hens.

        

 

Sagitta - From Dunlap Hatchery
We have two Sagitta Hens

        

 

Speckled Sussex
We have two hens.

        

 

Wyandotte
We have two Silver Laced Hens and two Golden Laced Hens.

It is not that precise a science. A big factor is that not all hens of any specific breed lay the same. Some are just better than others, even of the same breed.

If you cross a hen that lays well with a rooster that comes from parents that lay well, any pullets that you get will almost certainly lay well.

Many of the breeds you have should be good egg layers. A brown leghorn is usually a good egg layer. You should get some good egg layers out of many of those crosses.

35 hens to one rooster?  Get some vitamins for that boy.  As Ridgerunner says chicks out of a leghorn rooster and the production bred hens should be respectable egg layers.
