Here is a sample template you can copy and paste into your post to help the introduction juices flow: Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am so new to chickens that I don't even have one yet....thought I'd learn about them first, then get a couple How many chickens do you have right now Zero What breeds do you have? I want a member-of-the-family pet that provides eggs. I first considered a chicken as a pet when reading one of the OZ books. Dorothy had a hen companion, Billina. Apparently, L Frank Baum was a devotee of Hamburgs – Baum began a monthly trade journal, Hamburgs, and published a book on the subject, The Book of the Hamburgs: A Brief Treatise upon the Mating, Rearing, and Management of the Different Varieties of Hamburgs. At the moment, I am considering Easter Eggers as they are reputed to being friendly and hardy - and decent layers. The colorful eggs would be a fun perk! I don’t know if one needs to get color-proven layers. How else would one know if an individual chick of this ‘non-breed’ would have the "blue egg" gene? How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? I was googling “coops”, but didn’t join that time. Most recently, I googled "chickens" and "Kingman" to see what resources were right in my backyard, when I came upon this site. I am new to the high desert ecology so I have many questions about how to set up housing and protection in this area. What are some of your other hobbies? I like reading, but I am a new “empty-nester”, and need to build my hobby list back up. I also work too much, so I need to make sure I can manage a couple of hens. Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. My children are recently grown (the twins turned 18 last August), but I have two dogs and a cat. I moved to Phoenix from Vermont several years ago. I moved to the high desert about two months ago.

Home of the world's cutest dachshund, one crazy blue heeler, two cats,
one fat pony, and many (but not too many!) chickens

Can anyone tell me, how many are too many chickens?

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?
