I think I have a broody hen, she repeatedly goes in the nesting area. When I take her off she just lays on the floor and then after a while starts moving again. Then she starts ruffling her feathers a lot and scratching her beak on the ground. At first, I thought she was sick, but since she always returns to the same nesting area and is very vocal, I am guessing broodiness. I am taking her off from the area repeatedly. I finally got tired and blocked access to the spot. Hubby though is worried because the nesting place she uses to brood is also used by other chickens to lay eggs so he is concerned that the others may start laying eggs outside somewhere because their favorite nesting spot is blocked. My point is if she always lays there it is blocked any way as no chicken can lay there anyhow since she is there! There are other areas to lay eggs, so hopefully the other chickens will adjust.
I also, blocked access to the area because it is 100 degrees today, the area indoors is hot and I am afraid she does not drink. I also read that the body temperature of a broody hens gets high too so imagine how hot this poor chicken must be! And of course, I blocked access too because I am tired of moving her out of the place every half hour! Any ideas if I did good to block access to the area? Any tips on how to deal with this issue? It wouldn't be as worrisome if it happened in the winter but we have a heat wave and I am concerned about her! Any help is appreciated, I love my hens!
