With my most recent chick order, I was in love with my cream brabanter.  Out of the whole order, she was the one I wanted most.  When she arrived, my husband warned, "Don't get too attached or she'll turn into a rooster."  All of my other favorites have been roosters... my favorite from my first batch, my silver spangled hamburg, blue silkie, golden cuckoo marans, blue wheaten ameraucana...

And they all had to go.  sad.png  But the brabanter is a girl!!!  wee.gif

Chickens: faverolles, australorps, Delaware, barred rock, welsummer, silver laced wyandotte, lavender and buff x wheaten ameraucanas, BLRW, blue and splash andalusian, cochin, exchequer leghorn, silkie, brabanter, minorca, turken, RIR, brahma, speckled sussex...Ducks: two welsh harlequins, two blue swedish...  Two dogs, a snake, two parents and two kids... and food gardens everywhere else.

I am so glad you got your hen! The summer before last I had 4 Welsummer roosters, and just two hens, one I had given away...kept one hen out of that bunch.
You just never know.

Right, even buying sexed pullets is no guarantee.  I bought one of each kind that I wanted, and so there are a few that I'll try for again next year.  But if I'd bought 2 of each, what if I got 2 roosters?  Yeah, it's a toss-up.  Maybe the determining factor is how much it matters to you whether or not they're girls.  If you don't care, you get a lot?

Am def. a newbie, but I thought (and was told this at the Farm Animal Sanctuary today) that it was possible to keep a few roosters in your flock as long as you had good space/ multiple hens (we are shooting for at least 10 hens.. out of 21 possibles.... 15 were ordered as pullets, 6 are straight run)...

I dont mind feeding a couple extra roos, figure that it means extra protection for the pullets out here in the country....

It depends on where you live.  Some cities allow hens but no roosters.  My particular area allows any livestock that are not "neglected or a nuisance to neighbors."  We avoid the nuisance problem by not having roosters, and we even rehomed one noisy duck.  I have a friend who lives only 2 miles or so from me who has a couple roosters, but her neighbors don't mind, so it's not a problem.
