Button Quail Disaster, He Flew Away!

Today I came back from a family vacation. I was so upset to get a call from my neighbor who takes care of all my pets saying that some of the quail had died. The next day she called and said that the rest of them in one cage were dead. I was devastated. I got home and discovered that the quail were unable to reach the food bowls that my neighbor thought were theirs (They were in a big bird cage and my neighbor put the food in the hanging bowls meant for perching birds instead of in the saucer on the bottom of the cage.) I feel so guilty, I know it's all my fault that they starved to death. That's not all. Today I got home and buried the eight quail that died, and started to clean the cages of the remaining eight quail. I put my favorite one, a silver pearl in a small bird travel case and went outside in the yard to tell my parents that my favorite one was still alive. Well, he boinked right into the lid of the travel cage, it opened (I guess it was loose) and he flew so high and far into the distance. I was in such shock that I did not immediately chase it. I expected it to fall but it went right over my house and disappeared into a patch of woods. I thought they couldn't fly well but I was very wrong. I feel terrible, we looked for hours for him/her but he/she was not anywhere to be found. Is there any possibility of his/her being caught/saved? Any suggestions? Thanks so much for reading, and sorry for such a long post.

Oh geez sad.png sorry for what happened. I don't have advice on catching the quail except to put a cage it is familiar with outside and it might come back and go in the cage.

Such a sad story! ): Maybe try putting some of its favorite food out? Good luck, I hope he/she comes back to you...

I would try to use a call bird. Place a male alone in a cage and put him near where you saw the quail disappear to. With any luck, it'll crow and bring the other out or at least he may crow to him so you can kind of locate where he is.

We have a flock of chickens (mostly Seramas), Call and Mallard ducks, a rescued Chinese goose, a Royal Palm turkey, button quail, Coturnix quail and 6 parrots.
