Chicken thinks she has babies coming

I found my Buff Orp sitting on several cracked eggs in addition to the fake eggs . She was stinky and sticky and reluctant to leave nest. We have no rooster! Don't know how eggs got broken, had house sitter here while we were out of town.  I cleaned her up and the nest box, she has had some food and water, but is determined to go back and sit on a nest. I assume she thinks she is expecting. I have removed fake eggs and gone out several times to put her out for water, it's going to be 104 here today. Their coop and most of the run is shaded. I know to take out ice for water. Will run a fan out there too. Do I just keep chasing her out until she gives up? Any advice?

Thats what I'm doing with mine. I just keep putting her out. Some say to soak them in water, but that didn't work on my last one that went broody. Also I have heard if you put them in a wire bottom cage that will break them, but I don't have one so I just wait it out now.

I see you have been a member for a long time but just don't post much. Welcome anyway! I'm glad you are here.

Here is a thread about breaking a broody. I prefer the raised wire cage method myself, but it has been years since I've used it. Anymore, my broodies get fertile eggs.

I wanted to THANK YOU for your advice on broody buster wire cage. Worked in less than 2 days. Kept her in it during day and put her on roost at night with nest boxes covered up. So nice to see her running around with others again! Good thing she was the porkiest one too :)
