I'm freaking out! I live in Livonia, MI and our neighbors have a huge rat infestation, and they're coming into my yard to get the chicken food at night. So far, I have noticed about 10 rats, the largest being about 1 1/2 feet long, and mighty heavy. I have already tried a humane trap, but they cleverly avoided it, and now, my brother is going out to buy a BB gun and try to shot them! I don't want to see them killed, so I need to get rid of these rats!
I cant call the city to help, because they will make me get rid of my 5 chickens, who are NOT the cause. ( my neighbors neighbor has a huge compost pile, and I know this is why the rats are here, he has has skunks before. :/ )
Please help me! I'm desperate! Help!

Can you put the chicken food where the rats can't get to it? Clean up all the spilled food and only offer it to your chickens in a way that you can easily clean up any spilled stuff then lock it up for the nite?

you don't want to see them killed?? then live with them...... get tired of living with them, get some rat poisen, put it out at night.... you won't have to "see" them killed, they'll go off n die!!!!!

Sounds like you have an infestation also, Just get some one bite rat bait blocks and replace it as they eat it till they are not eating it anymore cause they are all dead.

place the bait where the chickens can not get to it.

Better to kill them.Put out poision in secure bait stations. You won't have to see them killed.Think of the diseases they bring.Their population will EXPLODE if you do not deal with it.Does not matter why the rats came. They are here now and thriving.Watch a few episodes of Infested and Monsters Inside Me.It might help you get over the killing issue.Good luck.

Best way we get rid of them is get some de con and put peanut butter under and on top of the food they can not resest the peanut butter

They can't resist the bait blocks, i learned that mixing things with rat poison was bad because a rat has to eat a certian amout to work so if you put peanutbutter in it they will get full quicker and not eat enough to kill them.
I have had a bat block in one of my storage buildings for 3 months before the rats came back to live and ended up eating most of the block, the rest is still there which tells me it is gone for good till the next one moves in.

Unless it's a pretty impressive BB gun your not likely to kill a rat that size with it. A high power pellet gun would work better for this but also be louder. The bait blocks that have been mentioned are probably your best bet.

Not trying to be insensitive but I guess I don't understand not wanting to see them killed. The problem will only continue to get worse until you deal with it. You will not be able to relocate them fast enough to keep up with their reproductive cycle and I don't know of ANYONE that would be willing to let you drop them at their place. I would put out bait blocks, traps, whatever it takes to get rid of the problem. If you are seeing some of them, there are a LOT more that you are not seeing.
