Week old chicks dying off? - Page 2

Their bedding is a paper bedding but it isn't small enough for them to eat. I was looking for aspen shavings but couldn't find them, and remembered this stuff from when I kept gerbils.

I'm assuming Pasty Bottom is pretty easily spotted? I haven't seen any problem with it.

I'm not positive what the temp is, their box is in the house, which is probably pushing 80, with a heat lamp over it. I moved the heat lamp back about a foot yesterday so that now its mainly shining on a small corner instead of half the box. They were staying mostly in that corner yesterday but not crowding together. If I turn the light off they would start peeping in what I assume is anger because it stops when I turn the light back on. SO, I don't think they're too hot.

After all my work yesterday, the third one died late last night. the lone survivor hasn't begun showing any of the symptoms yet.  I did talk to the breeder and she said she lost three of hers yesterday, but that she has several other breeds together and none of them were sick (just going by what she told me, who knows if its true or not) She has offered to give me replacement chicks, but I'm still sad about these guys not making it...

I now have the rest of them on  durvet electrolyte and some corid just in case.

next time you run into a pasty bottom chick. after you wipe it clean, squeeze that chick ( from both sides behind the wings ) to squeeze the poo out of it. then dunk the beak and get some water in it. and it will make it.

I do not like paper towels at all. chicks will pick at them and get them inside of them and you just fed them a cork. leave them on the wire. if you want something under them. cut open a paper feed sack and lay it out

a newspaper is better then the paper towel but not by much.

I much prefer them on the hardware cloth wire 1/4 x 1/4 size.

besides. no bedding being transferred to the water and feed dishes that way too.

just want to recommend a small tip for getting sick chicks to take in some liquid food mix,get a syringe [needle less] and fill it with the liquid food mix, dont force feed but make a blob come out at the end,it helped a week old non eating sick chick of mine get something in her though unfortunately she went down very quickly [coccidiosis].

incase anyone from the UK has problems with coccidiosis and sees this thread, woud also say to speak to the vet about prescribing baycox as corid is not used over here for some reason and baycox is our equivilent.

baycox pulled all of mine out of coccid that had spread between them though the vet hadnt a clue what corrid was.

Just did a little research online. Corid contains Amprolium, the same ingrediant in the medicated starter, just a stronger dose.  Baycox uses Toltrzuril. Only takes a two day dosage.

I'm not an expert,"ex" is a has been and a "spurt" is a drip under pressure!

That was how I was feeding the one I lost. i mix the starter in water, then suck some into a syringe and push up a bubble.  the chick could then drink the food infuse water at the tip.  I actually fed my crippled bird this way for several days until it started to eat.  That and holding him to the water dish.  That particular chick is doing well other than the crippled leg.  i just do'n't have the heart to put one down if it is healthy otherwise.   this one seems ot know me and cries for me until i pick it up. Not bad until it wakes me up to come hold it. :P
