Any tips on sexing 8 week bantam cochins? {pics added} of my new ones

I am going to try and get some hens today. Leaving here in about one hour to drive FOREVER and hopefully get a couple bantam hens.

I hope someone can give me a couple quick tips on cochins.

I have had rotten luck picking hens in the pullet bins this year and rehomed one 11 week old cockerel and 2 11 week old pullets went with him so he would not be alone.

( I even built them a house for the chickens ) he.gif barnie.gif

I do not know the breed of this one. The lady I got them from said she would lay blue eggs.

Boy I wish I could help but sexing chickens (bantams in particular) have always been a challenge for me. I hope someone posts some suggestions because I'd like to know more too! Good luck.

Sharing my life with my very understanding husband, 3 children, 2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 cockatiels, 3 rabbits.  Along with awesome 11 chickens and 2 ducks...so far

wish i seen this sooner...you should be able to tell the pullets from cockerels by their comb and wattle development...hope you picked out chicks that had little combs and no wattles along with no color in the comb

I ended up only getting one cochin and she fl.gif may end up not being a bantam when she is done growing. Tiny comb and no wattles yet so I am thinking I did choose a girl. There were a few that looked VERY rooish to me.

I also came home with a BO and BW as well as a blue whatever she is since she has a single comb no muffs no tufts and a big ole tale.

The lady I got them from said she would lay a blue egg. hu.gif

 

I was scared of ending up with another roo so I only got the one cochin that I was fairly certain would be female. She is a wee little thing. I am thinking she is only 4-5 weeks old at the most.

I will try and get some pics today.

Cochin males develop wattles and combs fairly early (mine always were obviously male by 3 to 4 weeks).

 

Just pick the ones with the least amount of comb.

I don't think I got a game or game mix. The lady I got her from had bantams but no games. She is as big as the BO I got and the BW same age.

Did I end up getting a Blue Andalusian with yellow legs?

Looking on Meyers website it sure looks like the blue andalusian hen in the pic.

Does not really matter I guess since she is a pet and we love her. She was the first one of this group to explore the run and to go into the coop.

As long as I did not end up with yet another rooster I am happy.
