I feel funny -

I feel funny joining today. I got my 2 chickens about a month ago. Rockie a Plymouth barred rock, and Oreo a little bannie. I never thought I would enjoy chickens. I only got them to keep my little duck company. Duckie was born in my hay barn, and his mom left him. I picked him up and tried to get mom to take him, but she absolutely refused. Duckie is a muscovy. I fell in love with the chickens immediately, and Duckie fell in love too. I kept them indoors until the dog crate wasn't big enough. I bought a coop and out they went. All was well until this morning. I went out to feed the horses and I saw the bottom door on the coop open. I ran over to find something had clawed at it, opened the door and there lay Rockie and Oreo. No wounds, but dead. I was just heart broken. I don't understand why a preadator would leave them. Poor Duckie is fine... physically, I am sure distraught mentally. I want more chickens. Husband fears it is too hot to try to raise more chickens with Duckie outside. We are running into the 100's .... would baby chicks make it outside? Or should I try to get a grown chicken?

I don't know the answer to your question but it sounds devastating =( I hope you get more chickens since you love them so much. Live and learn.

I reallly loved them. I enjoyed them more than Duckie... Duckie is very stand offish. I know his relatives are nervous around people and run for the pond. I just can't believe they are gone. They were so wonderful. I knew nothing of chickens when I picked them out, but the research I did made me thrilled with the Plymouth barred rock.... now I don't know if I want another like Rockie... she was just too cool. I think I'd like the gray Americuana. I like everything about Austrlops? and Orp.

Friday will be a week since I got my chickens from a guy I contacted to get a rabbit hutch from and he convinced me to take 4 egg laying chickens which I know nothing about. No coop - I put them in with my goats and now of course I'm researching my head off. I got a small coop which seems easy to break into, but I will put the coop in the goat run in shed, and I don't think predators will go in with my 4 big goats to get at the chickens - at least that's what I hope.

I was reading about raising chicks, and how much they can love you. I think if you get little ones, you can't put them outside yet - especially if it's real hot. Raise them in the house for a couple weeks? I'm sure hubby will love my suggestion....muhahah! =)

Hi and welcome-byc.gif from Ohio. So glad to have you aboard. It would be fine for chicks. They like it at 95 degrees to start anyways, so you won't need a heat lamp. But, it will be awhile before Duckie can be with the chicks. They will have to grow a while.Good luck. thumbsup.gif

Poor Duckie would not come out of his lower apartment of the coop, so I got two new chickens. I got one Americauna I named Angel and the guy talked me into a Norwegian jägerhone, which I had no knowledge of. After driving down state, he met me at Walmart, and I didn't say anything, but they are much smaller than Rockie and Oreo. But Duckie took right to them. He ran around very happy to have them. They shared some meal worms and huddled together to get to know one another. I still miss my. Rockie. And Oreo. Do predator blinking lights work?
