New Mini Colt (horse) - Page 3

One more comment on the matter of show/pet quality.  One of my pet quality minis came from show stock. Both parents came from excellent bloodlines, and were in the 32 inch range. The stallion was particularly nice, very upright and refined, and showed successfully at the regional level. My girl is dishy faced, very leggy and refined. She is also 36" (much too big for AMHA), very cow-hocked, and no one in their right mind would call her "upright." I also know of several minis that have won at Nationals/Worlds, that have half/full siblings that went for "$200 obo." My point is that while bad x bad hardly ever equals good, good x good doesn't always equal good, either. If you are serious about having a mini that your daughter can show, you are much better off buying one, rather than trying to breed one.wink.png

Anyway here he is, and if anyone know what color he is chime in, she is registered as 'silver bay' looks bluish at her points, I believe the stallion was a paint of some color, will have to look him up again.
Also looking for name suggestions, other then uncle sam, with a fourth of july theme.

Hi,

The colors you have are,

Mare: Bay/Silver Dapple also known as a RedChocolate in other breeds. She has 1 Bay gene, 1 Black gene and at least 1 Silver Dapple gene. She may also have 1 Red gene. The Red gene is covered by Bay And Black if only 1 copy is present.

Colt: Black/Silver Dapple also known as a Chocolate in other breeds. He has 2 Black genes, and at least 1 Silver Dapple gene, maybe 2 with both parents carrier's of the Silver Dapple. You cannot tell by looking if he has a Red gene.

Hope this helps. I am on the genetics committee for the Rocky Mountain Horse Association and understand color genetics and the Silver Dapple gene(Z). Goodluck with your boy.

I could see that with the mare.

So, now on the foal, he will be dark than Mom when he grows up correct? Since carryig 2 black genes instead of one? He also won't be quite as red as the mare either if she does carry a red gene right?

I will add some photos of some Chocolates and RedChocolate.c6e4c819-17b7-457c.jpg

RedChocolate This is Classie a homebred.

On the Red gene, it is hidden unless each parent donated one copy. Then it will cover all others(Black,Bay, Silver Dapple), but the cream gene will cover Red.

Beautiful horses Maye, I am a fan of gaited, my paso fino is 27 years old and still going strong, but have looked in the Rockies for when the time comes (I really need to face th facts that the time is coming!)

Here are some shots from today, the second shows the marks on his rear. or the first!

Those markings on his coat will go away after a bit, dutchhollow. He really does look like a light silver dapple (or silver black) to me. Genetically, without testing, all I can say is that he carries at least one black gene, and at least one silver gene. Since black is dominant over red, he could also carry a red gene, or he could be homozygous for black. With his blaze, there is possibility of a sabino gene as well. Also, since he is so light, I'd almost wonder if he also carried a creme gene. Once my friend gets his pedigree, I can tell if that is even possible. I know his dam doesn't, as she is clearly silver bay, and if she carried creme, she'd be a silver buckskin.

Figuring out colors in minis is so fun, isn't it? It's almost like a mish mash of every possible color, and you just have to find the one that mostly matches. It's a good thing I like figuring out genetics and colors, cuz otherwise I'd have pulled all my hair out long ago with my minis.
