Pasture grass

I planted a 24' x 40' section of pasture grass for my 10 chickens this spring. It contained wheat, red clover, vetch, pasture peas and a few others for them to munch on. I let it grow to 4' tall. When I let the chickens go at it they mowed it down in 4 weeks. I find that amazing as I thought it would last the summer. Has anyone else had any luck with anything that will last longer. I should have done the before and after pictures because it went from a jungle to the great plains in nothing flat....But the eggs where remarkable.

You can rotate pasture or you can build frames as above link shows (or give them your grass clippings from the lawnmower).

That calculates to about 100 square feet of pasture per chicken per month, or 25 square feet of pasture per chicken per week.  My pastured poultry operation is about 100 square feet per chicken per week.  Even then the ground shows damage and needs time to recover.   In short, I recommend you increase the amount of pasture available.

I thought I was all set for the summer with what i had....They are eating machines. I will try the rotational idea and the screens and see what happens.
