I'm about to get 6 chicks and this is my first experience. We are building a coop to keep them safe from dogs, hawks, and other hungry critters.

 

My husband is from Puerto Rico, and many of his relatives have chickens/roosters there. They all free range their chickens but put them in the coop at night. And you are right, there are a LOT of roaming dogs in Puerto Rico!

 

What breed of chicken are you looking into getting? Good luck!

Well I really have no idea. I was looking on this site at the breeds and such and my favorite one is the Orpington but I have no clue if that one is over here, my husband says yes but he calls it a different name, "La Ponedora" so I'm not too sure.

 

I also like the Australorp and Dominique but again no idea if they have those here. I did here that most over here are mutts though...

 

I'll be pretty happy with any though, I'm excited and anxious to have some already...should have some by the end of this month.

 

Again thank you all for your replies. I will be getting started on the coop tomorrow...any troubles and I know where to go.
