Gapeworm treatment?

Hello Pheasant people!

 

I have 2 female pheasants, approx. 3 years old. I believe one has gapeworm - often shoots head forward and makes a gaping chirp sound. My question is, what is the best treatment for a single bird? Should I treat all my birds (chickens and pheasants) for gapeworms? I've had all for about 4 years now and have never wormed before.

Owned by 2 Pembrooke Welsh Corgi's (Turbo & Diesel), 2 rescue cats (Penny & Datsun), 6 Easter Egger hens, 1 Light Brahma pullet, 1 Black Australorp, 1 Feather footed Bantam, 2 OEG hens , 1 Golden Wyandotte bantam, 5 bantam Polish pullets, 2 Turken pullets, one silkie mutt, and one VERY understanding hubby (Mike)... sooner or later they are going to kick us out of the city - I NEED a farm!

It wouldn't hurt to treat your whole flock.Your birds should be wormed 2 times per year,before breeding season,and after breeding season.I use Ivemectin,it comes in injectable and water solubul.I use the water ,but they claim the injectable works faster.I don't trust myself injecting a pheasant as they can be jumpy.

Thanks for the info Tony. My only local source in tractor supply and I only see ivermectin for injection of cattle or a 5L liquid topical and a apple flavor paste for horses... do you know what specific kind you used? Maybe I can order online from somewhere?

 

As for frequency, I only have two females, (no males chicken or pheasant) - does treating before and after breeding season matter in that case? Should I be fine just treating every 6 months?

The injectible ivermectin is also water soluble. The difference between the formulas: the blue liquid is 5mg/mL and the clear injectible liquid is 10 mg/mL.

Tractor supply carries it.It is the swine or cattle wormer in the brown and white box.

The water soluble I use is noted for sheep. There is also a pour on solution that can be applied and absorbed through the skin.

What about mixing some D.E. into their food? I've heard this will deworm the birds as well

diotomatious earth will only help to remove intestinal worms, not gapeworm. also ivermectin will not work for gapeworm, but it works wonders for intestinal worms and external parasites. we use the sheep drench and give the birds about three drops down the throat for pheasants, and about 5-6 for peacocks
