2 New Girls

Hi All,

Just got 2 new girls to the flock, Dolly and Big Bertha one is an anthrop and the other is a silver laced Winthrop (sorry about sp) lol :-) The question that I have is whether or not to force the chickens to go inside of the coop, upon just arriving. They are from the same flock they were all raised together over at my mother in laws house, the 2 that I got first (Peaches & Luna) came over in one trip and the other 2 that we just got came over in a separate trip. They just got here and it is time to lock all the girls up to make sure that they are critter proof but the 2 new arrivals don't seem to want to go inside of the coop, instead they are perched on the log we have set up as a roosting spot out in the run. Is this a problem to leave them out, I don't want anything to be able to get them but I am not sure if forcing them to be in the coop this soon after arriving is going to stress them out?? Any suggestions???D.gif

that's a tough one.  i'm sure they're stressed and fearful.  home is gone.  i guess i would try to put them in the coop w/a separate roost for them temporarily.  i would stay there for awhile to make sure no harm is done.

I would say put them in the coop and hope for the best. It's not worth the risk to leave them out. I've lost birds to predators in the night before, it's not something you want to risk happening. Congrats on the new girls and welcome-byc.gif from Arkansas!

I have 18 chickens, one kitten, 3 dogs, 2 hermit crabs, and live on 20 acres in the country. I am CrAzY about chickens and plan on getting more! I am continually working to better my chicken practices and to better my flocks.

thanks, I just went ahead and put them in there and they seemed a little hesitant at first but they quieted down after me sitting with them all for a bit :-) Thanks for the advice, we'll see what the night brings and check them all in the morning. I will update on how they are all getting along tomorrow
