Are my Australorps actually Jersey Giants??? :(

Im sad.  My girls are 12 weeks old this week.  They are now the same size as my 2 red laying hens.  The guy I got them from breeds both JGs and Lorps, but I dont think he knew the difference between the 2 breeds.  Im pretty sure that Stumpy and Dragon are australorps since both thier feet are slate grey, but all the others have yellow, even my blue pullet.  Im pretty sad about it because I wanted australorps soooo bad, now I have meat birds that Im not even sure are pure bred.  It could be a cross between Black Aussies and Black Jerseys, but either way, there is no telling.  I only hope I will end up with a good number of eggs come fall.  Any way to tell if they are mixed or straight JGs?

1 Blue JG and 1 Black JG,1 Penciled Rock Rooster.  1 Cornish chick, 5 Sussex, 3 mix chicks, 3 australorp chicks, 1 blue australorp chick, and one wild kitty!

10 meaties on the way, 2 red layers, 4 EE too!!!  Chicken Math strikes again!

The Rooster may crow, but it is the Hen that delivers the goods!

I don't even begin to know what a Jersey Giant looks like.  But all of these black birds look like my one Astralorp pullet.  In pic 8 (3rd from last) you can even see some green sheen on the back of the bird in the front.  I'm voting for BA.

The feet look yellow, so I would guess they are JGs.  JGs are respectable enough layers.

ETA: I think you might have to wait till they're older and compare to SOPs (particularly weight for JG) to decide if they are pure.

I'm sorry, are we looking at the same pictures?  Those legs/feet look black on my laptop.

I think they look like Australorps.

Look between the toes, does it look yellowish or pinkish?  I see yellowish.

Look at the photos here on feathersite:

Pinkish on Australorps

Yellow on Jersey Giants

Note, Jersey Giants can have dark legs--it's the undersides of the feet you need to look at.

Ahhhhh, I see what you are talking about.  Just shows my ignorance.  I didn't know the part between the toes (bottom) of the feet mattered.  When you said the feet looked yellow, I thought you meant the obvious tops of the feet.  My Bad.  And glad to learn yet something else on BYC from those more experienced than I.  hide.gif

Yeah they are definitely yellow between the toes. Yesterday we had good clear weather and I was able to get a good clear look at them.  I really hope they lay well, my whole operation was built around eggs! lol  I guess you are right though and we have to wait and see....I hate the waiting.

I have JGs.  Here are photos of their feet.

The degree of yellow can vary, but JG's must have yellow on their feet.  BA's have a pink tint when young, which turns grey when they are mature

BA and JG's look very similar when young.

The quality of your birds is up to the integrity of your breeder.  If he had BAs and JGs running together, yes you will have a mix.  Some may or may not have yellow on their feet.  The only way to tell is through DNA testing, but I'd rather spend my money on something else.

My 16 JG hens lay 13-14 eggs a day with an occasional off day of 7 eggs.

Married to the old dude, 0 human kids, 2 horses, 10 cockatiels, 2 parakeets, 1 sun conure, 1 amazon parrot,  1 eccentric peacock, 1 gsd, 1 pet terrapin, 1 Blue Copper Maran rooster, and 14 world famous Jersey Giants!

Stan the Man will be missed.
