Chicks do that sometimes. I had some who wanted to be picked up and carried around all day suddenly not letting me touch them or go near them. Maybe it's a phase?

My silkies all did this - they are 4 weeks and scream like banshees if you manage to pick them up. Maybe one of them is starting to calm down now? Definitely a big difference from the first week when they'd squawk but settle and then even sleep in your hand.

My BO did the same thing, from sleeping on me and not wanting to go back in the brooder to running and screaming. I continue to give starter mash from my hand and tell myself that I'm slowly buying back their love. One silkie actually allowed me to put her in my lap for her snack today. Winning!

I think life will be better when they're outside and we can just sit down on the grass and let them come over.

I noticed today that while the rest except the serama still like to play with us (me and my son) only fluff and bug dont get snitty about being picked up now. It must be a growing up thing. I wonder if it also has to do with them getting all sorts of pin feathers in uncomfertble places like neck and tummy and stuff maybe picking up is uncomfertble . They also spar a little more ernstly together some more then others. They are facinateing .. Fudge is still the only one that activly tries to claw his way threw our hands when we pick him up though barnie.gif. I would respect him more about not wanting to be handled but they out grew there rubbermaid bucket and I cant buy any thing bigger atm so I let them be in there at night when we are sleeping and whenever we leave the house so they dont wreck havoc or get eaten by the cat and put them in there play pen when we get up in the morning they get to stay most the day till we have to do stuff . So I have to pick him up and move him at least twice a day . Anyone have any ideas on how to make it less trumatic for him or should i just consider it drama.

I've noticed it does help to scoop from under rather than coming down from above like many predators....but of course with snitty silkies they run and flap and you have to put a hand over their wings to keep them from flopping off mid-carry and hurting themselves.

And the taller the tub/box the tougher this is. When we moved to a big tall box they got more skittish, even though I cut a flap in the cardboard so I can fold down most of one side and come at them a little more horizontally. From what I've read it's growing pains and most will get over it.

Our Sikie chicks went through a stage of acting like they were being murdered when we handled them. Try talking to your chicks in a soft tone which lets them know you are coming. Then when you reach for them...make sure they can see your hand before you lift them up. Dont reach down from above where they may think you are a predator. Instead, try scooping your hand under the chest and belly, palm side up...while slowly and gently lifting them up to see you. As they grow, you can cradle them in your arm like you would hold a football with their head facing your bent elbow. Even the loudest squawkers calm down when held like that. Eventually, they should become calmer.
