What age can a cockerel mate?

Mama to thirteen chickens (Amy, Tilda, Lily, Adam, Esther, Junior, April, Ella, Sofia, Brett, Davie, Elsie, and Hayley.  ). I lost my favorite chicken Nov. 25th 2012 to my cat Demi. She was a mix breed bantam. I also lost five White Silkies to a raccoon. two cats (Demi and Lulu), one Angus bull calf, (T-Bone), sister to seven siblings, and incredible daughter to one Grateful Daddy and Mommy.

Mine just started jumping on the pullets and he is 16 weeks old.  They don't like it and he isn't successful so maybe that doesn't answer your question... but he's trying. smile.png

The cockerels will start the behavior when the mood strikes.  The hens won't be receptive until they reach sexual maturity.  Until then, they will buck him off.

It will work itself out.
