Colorado - Page 575

Hi everyone, we're scared. We can see the flames clearly from our house, only a few miles away with the wind blowing our direction. Homes are definitely lost. I took some pictures a few minutes ago and you can see the shape of houses in the flames. My boyfriend's telephoto is even more clear - you can see the shape of individual windows and frames.

This was Sunday night. Small fire, safely a few ridge lines away:

This is a few minutes ago. That fence in the foreground is the edge of our backyard:

We brought our girls inside when the house got enveloped in smoke earlier. It was dark as night but the sky was red. We put them in the downstairs bathroom to protect their lungs:

They have evacuated everything west of the highway on the north side of town. We live about a mile from the highway to the east. wsmith or coloradogal, would you be willing to take in our girls if we get evacuated? We have a place to stay but friends in apartments (and in-laws) don't like chickens much.

Also I just want to say that I've NEVER seen so much poop on a bathroom floor before in my life. Now that the smoke is gone they are back in the coop and I have to clean it up sickbyc.gif

We had some smoke yesterday and I was a little concerned because I know how bad it can get.  Right now I bring them in at night but I was mostly asking just in case and for anyone who is in the heart of the smoke who might not know.  I came across one guy who posted on the emergencies forum because his hens were acting strange.  I told him to try here since so many of us are dealing with it.

Close - silver-laced cochin, which I didn't even know existed until I saw the for-sale post on craigslist. Looks the same as a SLW but with fluffy feet. She's gorgeous but a total brat. She is the only one who runs away from us every time, and then honks like a goose when you hold her.

It's actually in town now sadly. Look up "Ute Valley Park, Colorado Springs, CO" on google maps. The houses burning are just to the west of that park. Between there and the east side of town we have a creek, a raised highway, and a major shopping center with lots of paved parking lots that should serve as fire breaks. It's dark enough now that I can't tell exactly where it is except where the flames are.

I hate that you (and others) are in the situation where you need to bring the chickens in, but I LOVE that the chickens played with the toilet paper. Such a funny picture in an awful situation. Stay safe and keep everyone informed.

Mama to a whole bunch of birds. An unknown # of chicks, 10 EE, 1 RIR, 1 BR, 2 SLW, 3 silkies, 1 Cuckoo Maran, 2 blue cochin, 4 turkens, 2 doms, 6 barnyard babies, 4? black broiler sweeties I can't eat, and 3 embden geese. (36 chickens, 3 geese)

Jenelle.........Have you taught your girls to wipe their butts with toilet paper?  Looks like they have been practicing.

I was at UNC late tonight...driving home I looked to the south. I could see a huge cloud of smoke outside of Boulder...looks like a new fire has started today.

I have never seen a summer like this in Colorado.
