New to BYC from CT

Thread Starter

Hi,

I have been raising chickens for over a year. I had 3 hens. One Rhode Island Red. One Plymouth Rock White and one beautiful silver laced Wyendotte. The Silver laced was attacked by a racoon and was given to a Veterinarian who offered to repair her and give her a home. In return, I don't get to see her anymore.

So I went out and bought 2 new chicks that were about 5 weeks old. They were a straight run so I don't know if I picked out 2 more hens. I have another Silver Laced and a light Brahman. I think they are both roosters.

My new goals for this year are to work on changing the laws here in Somers, CT. The zoning laws say that you have to have "farm animals" housed in a structure that is at least 200 ft away from a neighbor's property line. My chicken coop is about 10 feet away. However, the neighbor next to me is actually a "farm" and has horses and lots of land. This neighbor put up an 8ft privacy fence so they don't see my chickens at all. Apparently she was the one who complained to the town??

If anyone has any suggestions, I am open to it.

Great place. Thanks for the welcome

Carolyn

Don't hesitate to ask any questions on the forum, no matter how silly it may be. tongue.png

Enjoy the site and good luck! big_smile.png

If every single person were to stop buying cage eggs and become environmental activists, the world would be a better place.

I went to Mcdonald's and asked for some fries. The cashier said 'would you like some fries with that?'

Life was much simpler when Apple and Blackberry were just fruits.

frow.gif and welcome-byc.gif !!!! Great to have you(: Actually there's a forum on here that's labeled "Ordinances in your town (and how to change them) I think you would have better luck there. I'm gonna come clean to my neighbors like "we're incubating eggs and we might have a rooster. :') lol. Good luck... I'm going to try keeping mine in a spare room in a basement, but that's a long way away, I'm counting my chicks before they hatch again ! Not good, not good at all... lol. My name is Steven by the way(:

A WHOLE LOT of incubating eggs...

And also, bribing your neighbors with eggs is something I've seen a lot(: You could just give them a carton every week, they'd feel bad for telling on you, and they benefit your chickens, too !

Welcome from a fellow CT resident. Did you know there's a CT thread too?

I hope you have luck in changing ordinances and keeping your chickens. I ordered 3 sexed pullets and it looks like 2 are roos! I'm hoping for accommodating neighbors but would still have to get rid of 1.

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?
