hen not eating flock raiser?

Thread Starter

i just bought a 25 lb bag of flock raiser in a small feed store, and started feeding it to my hen this morning. she went crazy over it for like 1 min, and then ignored it. i only gave her 1/2 cup and there is still more that 1/3 cup left! i was wondering if she needed more grit to process the feed. i also give her scraps, but only at lunch. does she not like it? i really don't want to buy another bag (about $15) of a different feed.

please help,

Caohorse

update: it is the next day and she still hasnt touched her food! i am worried that she will starve herself!

Relax - she just isn't hungry right now.  She doesn't need grit at all to process Flock Raiser, so if you just leave it out, she will eat it when she needs to.  Make sure she also has plenty of fresh, clean water and she'll be fine.  Do you have other chickens, or just the one?

Chickens are very social creatures and need to be around others of their kind in order to thrive.  It is possible she is depressed because she is alone.  Is it possible to get her a couple of companions?
