Can respiratory illnesses be transmitted to my chickens from neighbors chickens?

My chickens weren't sick until a week after I bought them. I figured that I was sold sick chickens and the stress caused them to start having symptoms. I have heard chickens clucking around in my next door neighbor's yard though. So I am wondering could my neighbor's chickens possibly have infected my chickens if they were carriers of a respiratory disease?
