Who says chickens are picky eaters?

Oh, they really do eat the darndest things, don't they.

What I need to film is my JG and snails.  In the spring when they are small, she'll eat them.  But now that they are big, she won't touch them.  And what's funny is if I call her, she comes over to see what I have.  She sees the snail and literally shakes her head no in disgust.  And then walks away.  She does it every time.

The hen who finds the hunk of "food" thinks to herself, " Wow, this must be really delicious - everyone is chasing after me for it."  The other hens think, " Wow, That must be really good - she is trying to keep it all for herself."

Your photos capture their antics well.  But I also love the sound that they make when  running with food.  My Ruby rooster found a little toad once and ran around with it, and he made the sound that maybe could be described as a cross between a whine and a growl.  He is usually good at sharing with his hens, but he just wasn't sure what he had found.

My husband said he is going to buy me a GoPro video camera and I'm instructed to wear it on my head EVERY time I go out to see the hens because he's tired of coming home from work and listening to my hilarious stories of their antics.  He wants VIDEO!!!
 

So funny!  One of our pullets ate a gecko once.  Some months later she and two others found a lizard and they all stared at it solemnly then walked away.  Guess they decided geckos aren't good eats :)

My LB found a worm when she was about 4 weeks old and ran around with it and looked as if she would burst with excitement.  Then, a few days later when we gave her another one, she looked at it and looked at me and then walked away.

Both my LBs turn up their beaks at any kind of bugs or berries or anything like that that they are supposed to love.
