Buffy is our only Orpington. She is independent, lower on the pecking order, but big, fluffy and likes to cluck. She lays frequently when not broody. She's my only brooder so far that I have...

These are my first chickens, gifts from a daughter for Christmas. Once they started laying, it's rare to have a day without one egg from each hen. They come when I call them, stay close to the...

I have six Japanese Bantams. Five hens and one rooster. Grace, Zoey, Lemon, DeLacey, and DeLaney are the hens, and George Tucker is my rooster. They make up about 1/5 of my chickens. I have all...

I just LOVE my sicilian buttercup, Poppy. Anytime I go outside she loves to hop up onto my back or my arm. She's very curious and loves to he held or played with. I've also noticed that she loves...

My Brown Leghorns are very good natured, and easy to care for. they lay well and lay large eggs. You can count on a dozen plus out of this coop every 4 days with only three hens laying. I get a...

Where are you in Northern CA? I am also in Northern CA. We live in the Sierra Foothills in a place no one has ever heard of called Oregon House, CA (if you have heard of it, no, we are not part of the "cult"). I just joined this forum recently and am awaiting my first order of chicks next week! I also ordered all pullets from McM. I am concerned now that you got so many roo's! I ordered from them because they did guarentee (i thought) them to be pullets. Did you contact them? Do they do anything? I really don't want any roosters. We call my daughter's little white mule our rooster, as he starts braying at first light. One giant, longeared rooster is enough!

Thanks to everyone for making me feel welcome!
This forum has already been extremely helpful in
identifying the different breeds I have, thanks for that also.
I do know where Oregon House is!!
I am in the same county, in Arboga.
I have lived in & around Wheatland area for the
past 35 years. Originally from the UK.
Yes I ordered all pullets, because I didn't want to cull
my flock. No, I have not contacted them regarding all
the roosters I now have. They have, [I believe?] a 90 - 95% rate of accuracy in sexing their chicks. So I did expect maybe 3 - 6 roos. Now I will have to decide who to keep &
what to do with the others. They are all very sweet, but some of the roos are beginning to show their aggressiveness. I know I can not keep this many roos as the hens will only suffer in the long run.
Over all I am happy with my order from them, I never lost any of the chicks, tho I did have to watch over 2 of them
very carefully for the first week.
That is great that you are in my county! Let me know what you figure out to do with your roos. Maybe the local 4-H would like to have them. The chicks from McM are supposed to be "show quality", even though the idea of a "show chicken" kinda cracks me up. I know the poultry leader for the Browns Valley group. Let me know if you want her contact info.
I didn't even want 25 hens, but that was the min order. I figured we'd have some mortatlity, but it's sounding like they do pretty well. These are my first chickens, so I hope I'm not in over my head. My daughter has been wanting them for a couple of years now, so they are supposed to be for her 8th birthday, but you will notice I keep refering to them as MY chicks....

csguinn - if you look at 'What breed is this?' You can see some of the photos of some of what I received.
So far I have identified -
2 RIR's
1 Speckled Sussex
6 Silver Spangled Hamburgs - 2 are roos
3 Buff Orph's one is a roo
2 Blue EE, one roo
1 White EE a roo
1 very large Barred Rock roo
2 Silverlace Wyandotte
4 Black unknowns?? one roo here also
2 Turkins, one Black, one Buff
possibly 4 partridge Wyandotte, one is a roo
How many is that??
Also several ARAUCANAS, but I ordered 3 pullets extra of
this breed & also 2 Cuckoo Marans
Mulemom - Thanks, nice to know we are sharing the same
interests, in the same county! I have access to my local 4H, and will inquire there, if anyone needs a roo. But good idea!
