I also have a duck diaper on the way so I will have him inside most of the day!

I have one female black Swedish duck, Quackers.

She is the world to me and I don't know what I would do without her.

I also have a hamster, 20 gallon fish tank, and two cats.

I am clearly an animal lover and that will NEVER change.

Well you CAN get a second, you are choosing not to. People keep repeating to get a second, because it is what is best for the one you already have. It's just part of the commitment to choosing to keep a duck, that you keep atleast 2 so they aren't lonely.

It would be the same advice if someone had two ducks or two geese and one died. Can they live alone? Yes Will they be their happiest? No should they have another of their own kind? Yes

Just merely a recomendation for what will keep your duck happiest, and in the end you happier too. A single duck outside will be LOUD looking for companionship.

Inside until school starts (assuming you are young and will heading back to school in fall)?

I will stop, not a diaper fan for ducks, or keeping the, inside all of the time. They really do need sunshine and dirt and bugs to be healthiest and happiest. IMO

Ducks, like all birds, bond more tightly to humans when there is only one bird.  I have 19 ducks, and they all act like they hate me.

You are the companion to the duck.  End of story.  I know you are going to be a great friend.  I look forward to more pictures.

Onward to other things.  Think safety.  Is your area safe from neighboring cats until the duck is too big to be prey?  Do you have proper ventilation in his night house?

Does duck have a view?  Can duck see movement, life, interesting things?

I know there are treatballs for chickens.  I have seeds to plant a garden for my chickens.  I wonder you can grow a bit of grass for your duck.

My ducks luv luv luv thier $5 baby pool.   I just filled a plastic toboggan with water, and that is now all the rave.  I live on a farm with a HUGE pond in my front yard, but my ducks still love their baby pools.

yippiechickie.gif  Congratulations on your new pet!

Thank You!!!

I have a secure fenced in lawn.

No cats.

Just little tiny yappy dogs.

Yes I have proper ventilation.

The cage will be made from metal mesh.

Yes the duck will be able to see from his cage from all sides.

There are always people walking by.

Dogs.

Birds.

All sort of interesting stuff!

I too have a baby pool for my ducky and he loves it!

I float clovers in the pool and he just goes crazy for them!

Along with a block of ice with carrots, peas ect. inside for a nice cooling treat!

He will have plenty of grass to scavange in!

We also have a large garden he can go into.

His cage will be on a grassy patch as well. (If not- I will use hay!)

Thanks for the long reply!
I appreceat you taking the time to reply!

Please stop with the questions about getting another duckling.

It's starting to make me feel like I'm mistreating my duckling!

Like I said before if this sounded rude in any way I'm sorry but there is no other way to put it!!!

First of all, i asked ONCE, secondly despite my reading through I had  yet to see you say why you cannot.. Feed for two ducks is not that much more, i go through 100lbs of feed a month for 17 ducks and 4 chickens.

Third no one is trying to make you feel like your mistreating your duck rather they are trying to sort out your plan, as said ducks are flock animals and do need companionship so to take that job on as a human is no easy task. Making sure people are well informed is what this forum is all about, we are all learning all the time that said, most of us try to keep others from making mistakes that we have made and to hope to have everyone gain as much info as possible so the well being of animal is top notch.

Here is a pic of the cage (Unfinished)

It will be rapped in metal mesh.

and the top will be cut it half.

One half of the top will be metal mesh and the other side will have the ply wood on hinges.

I used untreated wood.

It cost $103!!!

That is a GREAT start to you cage.  Keep us posted!

My ducks also like me to squirt them with the hose.  Watch on hot days for your duck to pant.  Ducks pant when they get too hot.

I have an old, holey hose wrapped around a tree.  On hot days, I turn it on and it mists water through the tree branches and makes a cool spot for them.

My dog adores his ducks!

With proper introduction, your dogs may like your ducky too.
