Do you know birds? There was this very noisy little bird outside today. I swear it was following me all day! Each time I came in and went back out - it was in the tree at my door. Just a coincidence, I suppose, but weird.

Not the best pictures, but...... what is this? It looked more greenish-yellow to me.

I was hoping my new butchering knives would be in the mail today. But, no.....

I have to work Wed and Thurs night. Guess it will be Saturday before I butcher. I hate to wait that long.

My three were just a start, there are nine more in there.  Three is about the limit I can do at a time, my back tightens up too much after that.  DH does the actual dispatching, I usually turn my head sad.png  Once they've been dispatched, I have no problem doing the rest.  My goal is to have the pen emptied by Friday, I have LOTS more that need to move in there.  I'm finally ready to start sorting out all the extra cockerels from everywhere.

It's supposed to be hotter each day all week.  I've started wetting down the runs every couple of hours.  I thought we were okay because the runs are fairly shady most of the day.

The difference between breakfast and chicks, is the temperature you use to "cook" the eggs!

What breeds do I have?  More than any sane person would own.

Our big trees have made a tree-mendous difference here with the heat....the birds are out under the lower hanging branches of the bushes and the high canopy of the oaks and hickories lets the breezes blow without the scorching sun....has anyone else noticed how hot the sun feels on your skin?  Seems especially hot.........just staying out of it makes a big difference.

Me too!!   highfive.gif

Our first two pens were built directly under a huge mulberry tree and the runs have full roofs over them.  Those birds stay very comfy and any mulberries that bounce into their runs.  Of course, I'm always picking up the ones that land in the path and throwing them to them.

The other three sets of houses we built are all set in under the oak trees (lots of huge trees).  I didn't notice until I lost the bird today, the pen on the far right of the newest build gets the morning sun and doen't get shady until afternoon (except of course they can go under the raised coop).  That's the pen we had moved the polish into about four days ago.

The worst problem about the pens under the oaks, we have a huge pair of red-tail hawks that nest 50 feet behind the pens.  We've had as many as 5 hawks perched over the pens, even on the edge of the pens.  All of the runs have full wire tops, but the chickens aren't aware of that safety feature.  Every time a hawk flies over or screams, every head pops up and looks around, lots of screaming............."Hawk, hawk, hawk!!!"
