I have 4 speckled sussex about 10 weeks. One has a comb that is more red then the others. Has been like that since they were hatched.

Its not that large and from what I have seen on this site some cockerel combs are much larger then mine.

Sometimes I think I see green in the tail and other areas like back and neck. But sometimes I thing the others have it too. This one has nubs on its hind legs but nothing is developing like spurs. I heard some hens have the nubs.

The tail looks the same as the others although this one with the red comb tends to keep the feathers more upright at times.

Here are some pics but they are from my cell phone. Let me know what you all think.

Chicken in question. See the comb is red. But not too big. 10 weeks.

Kere is the one next to others. They all feathered the same. I did read the roos feather later.

Here is the tail on the one in question.

A profile shot. See come is not too big for 10 weeks. Could be a hormone thing?

One in the background for comparison.

Its tail and another tail in the background.

See the one is darker then the others. Thats the one with the comb that is more red.

Here is a regular one.

Here is the one with the red comb. What you think?

The one with the red comb is in foreground. Compared to regular looking one in background.

Another of the red comb one by itself.

So any ideas? A hormone thing? Roo? Hen?????

Anyone have sussex in NJ. I am looking for three more in the 10 week range.

Thanks

Mike NJ

Most of the pictures were a little blurry and hard to see so I am basing this only on the first picture, from which I would have to say "cockerel".

Your pictures are hard to see, but I think the one in question is a boy. I have two Speckled Sussex, they both just started laying, and their combs and wattles look about the size of your ten week old.

Pictures are quiet blurry, but the comb is not that big, here are pics of mine at 7 weeks and full grown, she has huge wattles and comb but lays nice brown eggs. Stance is suspisious, but I would not confirm roo just by the red comb, but I'm leaning roo for his/her stance and legs.

OK could not see your pics but I got my other camera to work.

The little buggers dont want to stand still. But let me know what you think now.

Roo in question with tail facing you. All pics show speckled sussex 10 weeks old.

Two chickens we are pretty sure pullets.

Roo in question. Slightly bigger comb. Pic does not show it but much redder then others.

Roo in question side view. See tail feathers. Has green shine to them. Tail has more separation.

Roo in question another side view

Roo in question looking at camera

Another side view See those tail feathers? Two top tail feathers are just slightly sticking up more then the other chickens. Tends to keep tail up more often.

Close up of roo in question

Roo in question on left. See tail feather separation. Not tightly tucked like the others.

Roo in question.

Better close up of roo in question

Roo in question on left campaired to smaller comb on pullet right.

Another roo in question comb.See the dark greenish shiny feathers around neck?

I will try to get better pics later.

Are you talking the last pic?? The reason we think roo is only because the comb is slightly bigger and really red compaired to the other chickens. Also the tail kind of sticks up more. Some green in the feathers. And two little nubs on the upper legs. But some pullets I understand have this and may be a hormone thing. I wish I could see someone elses roo that was about 10 weeks.
