Are My Babies Okay? Pipped more than 12 hours ago.

Hello! This is my first time hatching and I have 3 eggs which I put on lockdown yesterday. When I took the auto turner out and transferred the eggs back into the incubator after adding water, I noticed all 3 of them were peeping! It was such an amazing and heart warming feeling to hear them talking to me after taking care of them for these past few weeks.

Anywho, last night around 7:00 pm two of the eggs started to pip (the shell was just raised slightly). This morning the shells were raised just a little more in both of them but now there is a TINY little hole and I see them wobbling all around and hearing them chirp every now and then still. I'm just wondering if they are struggling or if this is normal? I've never done this before, so I don't know the approximate time limit for them to start really making progress on breaking open the shell. It is just day 19 btw and they pipped last night, on day 18.

Thank you so much!

welcome-byc.gif It can take them a bit to get into correct position to zip the shell and they need to absorb the yoke which takes time. Keep humidity up and don't open the incubator because that will let humidity drop.  Early hatch means your incubator thermometer is off and temp in incubator was higher than 99.5 by a couple degrees. Good Luck !

Thank you! They've been up walking, sleeping, and chirping their little tails off all day now. The last egg still doesn't seem to have any movement in it. I'm hoping that one is still okay!

How's the last one doing?

Still no movement or pips :( I'm getting a bit worried. When I candled that one on day 18 it was moving around so I know it was alive going into lockdown. The chicks have been bumping into it every now and then but other than that everything has been okay in the incubator. Could it just be taking a bit longer?

I had this concern when I hatched eggs under my broody hens and was wracked with worry but a kind BYC-er said to wait at least 24 hrs after pipping and thankfully, after 18 hrs, it hatched. I've read articles that suggests waiting up to 48 hrs after pipping before assisting. I'm just a newbie so just sharing what little experience I have. Perhaps others could weigh in. Good luck!

I usually wait until a day or two after the last chick hatched before I open the remaining eggs. But that is risky sickbyc.gif What you can also do is hold the egg against your ear and tap it with your finger nail. if there's a live chick in there it'll let you know!

Congrats on your hatchlings jumpy.gif
