I had just gotten 4-6 wk old chicks and I was wondering how to tell the difference between male and female. I really want some hens. Is there a way to look at the feather growth or something? I could really use some help.

I usually look at the combs, but it's tricky when they are that young still. If you post some pics of them we may be able to tell you.

Sorry they are not good pictures. I'll try to get more later.
What breed are those chicks? I hve a hen thatis older with same markings as your red/white one. No clue on breed, and I have some hen and rooster chicks like your black, I was told cochin mix. I hatched them from eggs so it's hard to go by what people say when they have more then one breed and are guessing their breed the eggs are.

My black ones I tried determining a week ago and then now at 5 weeks old the boys combs are getting bigger. Need a front pic of your red/white chick to see it's comb.

The first one is a buff laced brahma I think. The others are silkies. What kind of comb is your black chicks getting? Silkies have a walnut comb. I could try to get a front picture of the brahma but it will be hard. She(maybe a she

) is super camera shy. Could you post a picture of your black chicks? I'd like to see if they are silkies.

They have a regular comb. But really do look like your black chicks. at least my pullet chicks that are black do.

Hmmm....Could they be frizzles? Are their feathers curlyish or soft and fuzzy?

Well Frizzles (atleast mine is) are good layers, I think. Mine was the first of my flock to ever lay an egg.

well that's good news. My mom was hoping for good laying hens. I also gave her a new rooster. Get some new blood in her flock. Plus If I ever get a house we'll be taking that rooster back and giving her a different one. :D
