Reusing hamsters old sawdust?

Not really sure where to post this so sorry if its wrong.

I have a hamster and I clean him out every Friday night. He only ever poops/pees in one or two corners and is in a tank not a cage although I cant think what difference that makes..

Anyway! I hate throwing out the sawdust when there is nothing really wrong with it. As I can pick up the clean parts avoiding the toilet areas in the corners, do you think it would be okay to reuse in my chicken coops in their nest boxes? I current use straw because when my uncle first gave me chickens, he bought that with him and said he uses that but I see a lot of people using sawdust and was wondering if I could reuse the old shavings, when I run out of straw or simply just instead?

My hamster has always been in perfect health and I can't see what he might pass onto them?

Just want to get more for my money really. :)

Do you compost?  It would be the perfect thing to add for the carbon component.  I don't know whether it would be bad to let the chickens use it, but I don't think I would do it.

Hill House Dorkings is home not only to 10 Silver Gray Dorkings, but also 3 Cuckoo Marans, 2 Golden Sebright Bantams, and 1 Mille Fleur d'Uccle bantam.  I'm an RN, a Master Gardener, and a wife to my husband of 15 years and mommy to my two kids, ages 9 and 12.  Our family also includes a kitty, a Leonberger, 2 hermit crabs, and 2 guinea pigs.  Whew!

Hamster shaving are sometimes cedar and cedar shavings are not supposed to be good for chickens  I would also compost it  Better safe than sorry

Why don't you just clean the corner or his cage and keep the clean shavings in there? You would save a lot of money and waste.

Not only are the cedar, but remember, hamsters are rodents. You wouldn't put rat leavings in your coop so why put hamster in there. Even so, it probably isn't enough to do the chickens any good even if it was safe.

Love those Orps!

I don't care why the chicken crossed the road, as long as mine don't!
