would homemade waterers and feeders work or do they have to be store bought

They work very well!  Go to the Coops tab and check out all the homemade feeders and water-ers on there.

BYC has some VERY creative folks who are pros at using whatever is handy to get the job done.

Yes! I have a wooden homemade feeder designed by a member of BYC(KDK1) and it's awesome!

Outside my coop. Holds 100#'s of feed

The tray inside. Hubby made a detachable top for easy cleaning. Sorry, I don't have a pic of it.

I use shelving over the feeder to stop poop from falling in. My winter photo, I take the heater out in the summer.
